Victorian Valentine Workshop

A Victorian Valentine Workshop will be held by the Carson City Historical Society at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum (1207 North Carson) on January 30, 2010. There will be two workshops: one from 10-12 noon; the other from 1-3 pm.

Seating is limited for the $20 workshop so reservations are required. Please call Paula at 887-8865 to make your reservation, and to learn what you should bring to the workshop to make your individual valentines.

The Carson Tahoe Regional Health care Auxiliary is sponsoring a V & T Wine/Cheese/Dessert Train. The ticket includes wine, cheese, dessert tasting and train ride to and from Virginia City, tour of "The Way it Was" Virginia City Museum Tour, lunch at the Pizza Palace, shopping discounts, shuttles for transportation. The Mystery of Amelia Earhart (Part 1)

On Tuesday, April 20, Wally Earhart will present a lecture on solving the mystery of Amelia Earhart as part of the Carson City Historical Society's "Reflection" lecture series. The lecture will take place at 6:00 p.m at the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop, Carson City, Nevada. Wally, who is a relative of Amelia Earhart, has traveled far and wide and done extensive research. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross for her solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. She lost her life during an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 and disappeared in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10 Electra over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.

The lecture is sponsored by the Carson City Historical Society and the Carson City Library. It is free and open to the public. (Part 2 is Tuesday, May 18, 2010.)

On Sunday, May 2, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., the Carson City Historical Society and Parks Foundation will have their annual nomination and election of officers at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum, 1207 North Carson St., Carson City, Nevada. We will also be serving special homemade desserts, followed by a social hour.

All offices of both the Carson City Historical society and Parks Foundation are open for nominations: President Carson City Historical Society, President Parks Foundation, Vice Presidents (2) CCHS, Vice Presidents (2) Parks Foundation, Secretary, Treasurer (1) of both organizations. If you like to make a nomination and cannot attend the May 2 function, please call Jo Saulisberry at 246-550 or Paul Cannon at 887-8865.

"Through the Garden Gate"
Tour and Antique Sale, June 6, 2010

On Sunday, June 6, 2010, from noon to 5:00 p.m., the Carson City Historical Society will be having their annual "Through the Garden Gate" tour with six locations. Those on tour this year are the Bliss Mansion, and Foreman-Roberts, Krebs-Peterson, Colcord, and Crisler Houses. In addition, there will be an antique show and sale at the Barber-Belnap home. Tickets will be $15 per person.

The Society is currently seeking volunteers to assist with the event. If you are interested, please call Sue Ballew at 882-5594.



"How to Write and Publish Your Own Book"

The Carson City Historical Society presents "How to Write and Publish Your Own Book" a workshop by Pat Cuellar June 22 and 23 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop, Carson City. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Pat Cuellar is a freelance writer and author of "Your Life in Print Story by Story," booklets and poetry. She is also an outdoor photographer. She has taught non-fiction writing and self-publishing for over 12 years through adult education programs and other venues, most recently at the Genoa Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival." "Your Life in Print Story by Story" will be available for purchase and signing.

The June 22 workshop will cover ten steps to "build" and organize your book, book cover, title, target market and much much more. The June 23 workshop will cover self-publishing basics, subsidy press, website and marketing.

The lecture is sponsored by the Carson City Historical Society and the Carson City Library.



Carson City Historical Society Hosts Ice Cream Social
Saturday, August 14, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Come join the fun on a cool summer evening when the Carson City Historical Society hosts their annual Ice Cream Social. Special ice cream and cookies will be available for $4.00 per person -- and children attending will be able to build their own birdhouse courtesy of Jim DeMagistris of Woodworking Specialties. The evening will be filled with music as the "Millennium Bugs" will be playing during the event. The Ice Cream Social will be held Saturday, August 14, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Foreman-Roberts House Park, 1207 North Carson, Carson City.

The Carson City Historical Society is a nonprofit organization. The proceeds from the event benefit the Carson City Historical Society "Carriage House Project."

Park Foundation is accepting nominations

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation, Inc. (the Park Foundation) is accepting nominations of individuals and organizations and businesses to be recognized for their contributions to Carson City's park and recreation. The selected names will be added to Memorial Wall at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion followed by a ceremony on Veterans' Day, November 11, 2010.

The categories are:

  • Organization of the Year
  • Business of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Years

A selection from the ballot of nominees will be made at the Foundation's October board meeting.

If you make a donation of $100 or more to the Park Foundation, we will add the name of your loved one to this Memorial Wall.

Please send your nominations or donation with a small biography to The Park Foundation, 181 Heidi Circle, Carson City, NV 89701 prior to the first Monday in November. Nominations are due by Oct. 2, 2010, and may be e-mailed to Fred@Stanio.Carson-City.NV.US.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation announce this year's (2010's) recipients of Special Recognition Awards

Organization of the year - For planting trees in Mills Park, planting flowers at the Roberts House and donating $150 to the Fish Pond the Organization of the Year award goes to the Mark Twain Garden Club. The garden club has been in Carson City since 1949 planting around the Brewery Arts Center, Governor's Mansion, old Carson Tahoe Hospital, Mills Park, etc.

Business of the Year - For the years of support of the Arlington Ice Skating rink program the Business of the Year award goes to the Carson Nugget.

Volunteer of the Year - For his many years of promoting the Urban Fishing Pond project. The Volunteer of the Year award goes to CK Baily. CK has spent a lot of his raising funds for this project accumulating nearly $475,000.

Volunteer of the Years - For his dedicated work as a volunteer for many Carson City non-profit organizations more notably as the treasurer of the CC Historical Society for the last 20 plus years, a volunteer in the Jr. Ski Program for over 40 years, and a member of the Carson City Sheriff's Aero Squadron since 1968. The Volunteer of the Years award goes to Chuck Saulisberry. Chuck has been a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol for over 40 years.

In recognition of their many contributions to the Carson City Park system, each recipients name will be placed on the monument located in east Mills Park at the entrance to the Pony Express pavilion. There will be a dedication ceremony on Veterans Day November 11th at 2pm at the monument.



Christmas With Mark Twain
at Bliss Mansion, Dec. 5, 2010

The Carson City Historical Society presents, "Christmas with Mark Twain" at the Bliss Mansion in Carson City, Sunday, December 5, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event includes an evening with Mark Twain (McAvoy Lane), dinner and a tour of the Bliss Mansion. David Bugli and Mark Twain will present a piano-and-narrator version of "Becoming Mark Twain." Guy Rocha, former Nevada State Archivist, will also be a speaker at the event.

The dinner includes tri-tip, celebration shrimp with lemon pasta, three-cheese tortellini alfredo, roasted herb and garlic red potatoes, wine and dessert. Cost for the event is $50 per person ($40 for CCHS members). Please make reservations by calling Gary Cain at Westwall Militaria (775-885-7643) or Sue Ballew at White Cat Antiques (775-841-1975). Checks may be mailed to Carson City Historical Society, P. O. Box 1864, Carson City, Nevada 89702, or tickets may be purchased at those locations and at "Play Your Own Music" at the Carson Mall.

Please make reservations early - there are 75 spaces available. Deadline for reservations is November 30. The Carson City Historical is a nonprofit organization. Funds from this project benefit the "Carriage House" project.
