Victorian Fashion Show
Sunday, March 11, 2012

Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 11, 2012, 3-6 p.m. to attend the third annual Oh, My Bonnets and Bustles! The Daily Grind of 19th Century Women Fashion Show held at the Nevada State Museum. Tickets are $30 and will be available beginning Feb. 1, 2012, at the Nevada State Museum store. Only 90 tickets will be sold in order to maximize the experience for attendees, so make sure to get yours soon! Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the NSM and the Carson City Historical Society.

The event will highlight women's fashions from the 1850s through the early 20th century, roughly the same time period that Queen Victoria reigned in Britain - hence the "Victorian" Era. The fashions for the event come from the collection of Tina Davis-Hersey and Carolyn Davis. The collection includes original outfits as well as costumes created by the mother-daughter duo from historic patterns. The show will follow a series of vignettes of daily Victorian life, from dressing in the morning to dancing in the evening.

The Museum's most recent exhibition, Dress and Designer, features the inaugural ball gowns worn by First Lady Kathleen Sandoval and designed by fashion designer and UNR art professor Virginia Vogel. Mrs. Sandoval had two gowns made, one she wore to the ball in Las Vegas and the other in Reno. Both gowns use the same fabric, with similar skirts, but the design and cut of each bodice and jacket are very different.

Curator Jan Loverin of the Marjorie Russell Textile Center has installed two cases featuring women's winter wear from the 1910s and 1920s, located in the slot machine gallery. Dramatic in black and white, each case features beautiful black silk velvet outerwear and accessories.

A reception with refreshments and raffle will follow the show. Music will be provided by the Silver Strings, a quartet of musicians from the Carson City Symphony. Guests are encouraged to dress in period costume for the event.

Contact Tina Davis-Hersey at 671-2364 for further information.

Jed Block to do "Now and Then" Slideshow

Photograph of Jed Block

Jeb Block will be doing a slideshow/talk on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Carson City Library. The title of the talk is "Now and Then: a Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes." Mr. Block has collected numerous pictures of Carson City's Carson Street and downtown area from earlier periods, such as the 1950s and 1960s, and compares them to recently taken photos of the same locations. These comparisons reveal a lot about the history of Carson City and the colorful people who shaped its future. The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by the Carson City Historical Society in cooperation with the Carson City Library.

Jed Block is a third generation Nevadan born and raised in Carson City, Graduated from Carson High School, BA in Communication from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. Currently (or recently) he sits on the Board of Equalization, the Carson City Cultural Commission, is/was Vice President of the Brewery Arts Center, and fills the Carson City Chamber of Commerce seat for Redevelopment Authority Citizen Committee. He is very interested in Carson City History and would one day like to have a City Museum or a wing of the Nevada State Museum. His family owned business, State Agent and Transfer Syndicate, Inc., was formed here in Carson in 1903.

Research Group Meets at Carson City Library
70 year anniversary of "The Remarkable Andrew" -- movie viewing
Saturday, May 19, 2012

GIF of Sherlock Holmes

Here is a message from Sue Ballew concerning the Carson City Research Group:

We're going to have a Carson City Research Group meeting Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the Carson City Library. While I was doing "Past Pages" this week, I ran across a story about the showing of "The Remarkable Andrew" and the opening scene of the movie shows the old post office, now the Laxalt Building. Also shown is the Rinckel Mansion. This was filmed partly in Carson City in 1942 and shown in the theater here which used to be was at the corner of Carson and Robinson. I have been able to gain access to use of the movie through the Carson City Library who is sponsoring the event along with the Carson City Research group.

Wouldn't it be fun to step back in time to 70 years ago and see what Carson City was like? There are a few photos from the time the movie was made in Carson City also. Refreshments will be provided, but please bring a beverage. There will be a short meeting just prior to the showing of the movie. All of our meetings are free and should be a lot of fun!

The film is 81 minutes long and stars Brian Donlevy, William Holden, Ellen Drew, and others. Here is a brief summary: When Andrew Long, an accountant played by William Holden, finds a $1240 discrepancy in the city budget, his superiors try to explain it. In his trouble, the spirit of Andrew Jackson, whom he idolizes, visits him, and in turn, summons much high-powered talent from American history...which only Andrew can see.

Hope you can come.

Annual CCHS Christmas Party
Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012

Photograph of xxx

The Carson City Historical Society's Christmas party will be Sunday, December 16, 2012, at the Bliss Mansion from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and we will be very pleased if you will come. If you haven't been inside the Bliss, then this is your opportunity. If you have visited the Bliss, then you know what a marvelous venue it is.

We are sure to have a festive holiday afternoon with hors d'oeurves, wine, and two kinds of entertainment. Dr. Michael Fischer, well-known Chautauqua speaker, will treat us to his impersonation of Governor John Sparks. This promises to be a fun way to learn about one of Nevada's most colorful Governors. His home, The Alamo, was re-sited on Old Hwy 395. Probably you have been curious about the yellow house sitting in the curve of the hill. That's it!

Following Dr. Fischer, Consort Trio (a trio from the popular Consort Canzona including harpsichord, cello, and recorder) will perform. The trio will play music from AD 1400 to 1620. You won't want to miss this delightful performance!

Cost for this event is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. Please send your check made payable to Carson City Historical Society to Chuck Saulisberry, 207 Doolittle Court, Dayton, NV 89403 before December 12, 2012.

We are looking forward to celebrating Christmas with you.
