Author Sally Mooney to Lecture on Sunnyside Ranch
Thursday, June 20, 2013
Sally Whipple Mooney will present a free lecture called "On the Sunnyside of Life,"
based on her book by the same name, on Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
at the Carson City Library auditorium, 900 N. Roop St. Her book is a
fascinating collection of short stories about life on an isolated cattle ranch,
Sunnyside Ranch, in eastern Nevada, where she grew up.
Ms. Mooney writes, "When I read stories of women on ranches, I wonder if I should
consider myself a ranch woman at all. I lost that life when I was twenty years old.
Then I realize in my heart I have never left the ranch. It is where I will always be.
If you'd ever lived a cowboy life, it will forever define who you are. Those years
defined who I am from my work ethic to my love of being outdoors and alone." Ms. Mooney
is a retired schoolteacher who taught at Bordewich-Bray Elementary School,
Fritsch Elementary School, and Eagle Valley Middle School.
This presentation is free and open to the public. It is part of a planned
series of "Third Thursday" lectures by the Carson City Historical Society and is
presented in cooperation with the Carson City Library. If you have questions,
please contact David Bugli at 775-883-4154.
Ms. Mooney's book, "On the Sunnyside of Life," is available through
Amazon.

Tom Henderson and Kyle Horvath Present "Walking Lecture" on
the History of Trees in Carson City
Thursday, July 18, 2013
The Carson City Historical Society presents a free "walking lecture" on the
"History of Trees in Carson City" on Thurday, July 18, 2013. The presentation begins
at the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., at 6:00 p.m. with a
short movie about trees of our area. Kyle Horvath, current chair of the city's
Shade Tree Council, will introduce Lee Ann Keever, former chair of the Council who
was involved in the production of the movie several years ago.
Then, participants will drive over to the Capitol Ground for the rest of the lecture.
There, in the peaceful, evening shade of the many trees that blanket the once-barren
Capitol Grounds, join Tom Henderson, a Certified Tree Risk Assessor and an
ISA Certified Arborist, as he discusses the trees surrounding the Capitol
and more about the history of trees. Last year, as part of the Carson City
Historical Society's Garden Tour, Tom gave a similar "tree walk" in this serene,
park-like setting.
The Carson area of the Eastern Sierra is home to many beautiful trees. Many of
the Eastern ornamental trees planted by George Washington Gale Ferris, Sr.
(father of the inventor of the Ferris wheel) in the late 1800s still adorn the
Capitol grounds. Carson City is home to 25 Nevada champion trees, some on the
Capitol grounds. Tom will share insights into what the fossil record shows us of some
of the earliest tree species in our area.
Thomas Henderson is the President and Owner of Healthy Trees, Inc. He is also known
in Carson City as founder of the Fruit Barons, a group of volunteers who pick fruit
and donate the harvest to several local charitable organizations. You can find him on
stage with the Carson Chamber Singers and Consort Conzona (early music), where he
sings bass. He "grew up" in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has lived in Carson City
since 1980. His website is www.healthytreesonline.com.
Kyle Horvath is head of Panacea Planning Group and an avid tree lover.
He organized the June 21st Blinky Man event in Carson City.
This presentation is free and open to the public. It is part of a planned series of
"Third Thursday" lectures by the Carson City Historical Society and is presented in
cooperation with the Carson City Library. If you have questions, please
contact David Bugli at 775-883-4154.

Jennifer E. Riddle, Sena M. Loyd, and Stacy L. Branham Present
"Nevada State Prison: A History,"
a Lecture on Thursday, August 15, 2013
A bloody palm print, footprints of monster men, the nation's first legal lethal
gas chamber--all of this and more are at the heart of the Nevada State Prison story.
Find out about these nuggets of history by attending a free lecture entitled
"Nevada State Prison: A History" on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at 6:00 p.m.
Jennifer E. Riddle, Sena M. Loyd, and Stacy L. Branham, co-authors along with
Curt Thomas of the recently published book, "Nevada State Prison," will be
making the presentation. The lecture will be at the Business Resource Innovation
Center, the BRIC, which is a partnership of Carson City Library, Office of
Business Development, Building, Engineering, Planning, and Business Licensing
and is located at 108 E. Proctor Street.
Founded in 1862, before Nevada was "battle born," the prison is the oldest
continuously operated penal facility in the state. Over its 150-year history,
the prison has been home to some of Nevada's most notorious criminals as well
as some of the state's stranger events. Fossilized footprints of a "giant race
of man" were found buried deep within the prison quarry. The prints gave rise
to the infamous Homo Nevadensis, a supposed lost branch of the human evolutionary tree.
On the more macabre side, the prison hosted the nation's first state-sanctioned
execution by lethal gas. While dutifully and vigilantly serving its penal function,
the Nevada State Prison has periodically garnered international attention and amassed
a history worthy of study.
Please join us to take a look at unpublished images, learn a bit more about those
that did get published, and explore the storied history not included in the book.
This presentation is free and open to the public. It is part of a series of
"third Thursday" lectures by the Carson City Historical Society and is presented
in cooperation with the Carson City Library. For more information, please see
CCHistorical.org or contact David Bugli at 775-883-4154.

Mary Fischer Presents "Carson City's History in Motion" Lecture
Thursday, September 19, 2013
Mary Fischer will present a free lecture called "Carson City's History in Motion"
on Thursday, September 19, 2013, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Fisher is from GROW (Gardeners Reclaiming
Our Waysides). Her talk will discuss the various artistic vignettes presented at
each of the gateways and interchanges of the Carson City Freeway/Bypass. The lecture
will be at the Business Resource Innovation
Center, the BRIC, which is a partnership of Carson City Library, Office of
Business Development, Building, Engineering, Planning, and Business Licensing
and is located at 108 E. Proctor Street.
Residents and visitors of Carson City may be familiar with the large eagle
sculpture at the north end of the Bypass introducing southbound travelers to
the Eagle Valley. Vignettes along the Bypass to the south, as far as
Fairview Drive, relate to the history of Carson City. Other vignettes are
planned for Phase II of the Bypass project when the Bypass connects with
Route 50 at the base of Spooner Summit.
Click here to see a brochure
with a map of the vignettes
in Phase I of the Bypass in a new window.
GROW is a grassroots organization that started as a cooperative effort
of Master Gardener volunteers and concerned citizens of the community.
GROW worked with other citizen groups and organizations to have landscaping,
artwork, and a multi-use pathway included along the 580 freeway ("Carson Bypass")
corridor. The goal is to develop an eye-pleasing corridor for walking, biking and
other recreational activities and an attractive roadway for vehicular traffic.
Information about Mary Fischer's book, "Carson City's History in Motion" can be found at
www.Blurb.com, where you can search
for "Mary Fischer Grow" to locate her book.
This presentation is free and open to the public. It is part of a planned
series of "Third Thursday" lectures by the Carson City Historical Society and is
presented in cooperation with the Carson City Library. If you have questions,
please contact David Bugli at 775-883-4154.
