Foreman-Roberts House Damaged by Arsonist
August 28 and 29, 2016

Photograph of damaged south doors.

We regret to report that the Foreman-Roberts House Museum was damaged by two arson attacks, in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 28, and Monday, Aug. 29, 2016. The first attack was an attempt to burn the kitchen door on the east side of the building. Although the door was a total loss, most of the damage was confined to the area of the kitchen, which was not part of the original house. The Monday morning arson was to the double doors on the south side of the house (see picture). This resulted in damage not just to those doors but also to the second story balcony area. Smoke damage is a major concern since smoke is acidic and can damage historic materials in the buildings.

In addition, two windows were broken on the west side of the house prior to the arson, on Aug. 23. The Sheriff's Department are investigating these events. Officers of the Historical Society are working with insurance and restoration people. Under the Historical Society's agreement with the city, Carson City is responsible for the maintenance of the building and the Society is responsible for the contents of the building. The building is on the National Historic Register, and restoration work requires careful attention to historic details and procedures.

An article about the fires is available at CarsonNow.org. Click here.

The Museum will remain closed to the public until proper restoration work has been completed.
